17 May 2024 - Malaga Spring League - Final Week

Congratulations to 2024 Champions Lauro Golf Bowls Club

In a Final week that had everything to play for, the top 4 positions were wide open.
The leage couldn't have been planned any better as 1st played 2nd and 3rd played 4th. With only 4 points separating the top 3 places - and 14 points to play for in a Match - the winner was impossible to predict.
Favourites were probably the leaders Lauro Golf Bowls Club with a 100% win record but La Posada in 2nd place had a history of very big wins in their victories meaning they were more than capable of overturning the meagre 2 point lead in the table that Lauro held, despite them winning more games.
Meanwhile Mijas had to play Miraflores and were hoping to take advantage of any slip between the top 2 by winning big against the 4th place side. Miraflores though had some very close results in their mathces and a win for them would not be a big shock.

As it played out 2023 Champions Lauro pulled out their best result of the season to absolutely destroy La Posada 12-2 and march triumphantly to the League title adding the Spring League to the Winter Triples League title they claimend earlier in the year.
Miraflores triumphed over Mijas, 10-4, to leapfrog to SECOND place.
Saydo and Benavista each won 3 games with Saydo edging the shot difference to win 8-6.

14 May 2024 - Malaga Australian Pairs Competition - Semi-Finals

Semi-Finals in Play

The Semi-Finals lived up the the high standard of the previous rounds.
Nick Cummins and Carolyn Hogarth (La Posada) got off to a flying start against Marie Carmen Foletti and Jack Gordon (Benavista) picking up two 4's and a 6 in the first 6 ends to lead 15-5! In a classic "game of two halves" Marie Carmen and Jack won 5 comsecutive ends to take a 19-17 lead - only to see the scores levelled at 19-19. The Benavista pair held their nerve to see out the game, winning the final 2 ends to make it 22-19.

Meanwhile Lauro's Phil and Hazel Guttridge were having a similarly good start in their game against Doug and Julie Hall (Benavista), winning 6 of the first 8 ends to lead 10-2.
The siutation quickly turned around to 10-10 but Phil and Hazel took control of the final 6 ends yo win 17-13. Not so much a game of two halves as a game of three thirds.

Tomorrows Final then will see Marie Carmen Foletti and Jack Gordon (Benavista) against Phil and Hazel Guttridge (Lauro) in what promises tobe another entertaining game. It starts at 2.00pm and I am sure both teams will be pleased of your support.

Ian Patterson and Mary Dethridge (Mijas Bowls Club)

2024 Champions

An exciting Championship was deserverdly won by the Mijas Bowls Club pairing who won a close Final against fellow Mijas bowlers Alan and Lynda Robertson.
The all Mijas final was keenly contested in a tricky cross wind by the leads and skips through out. The lead changed six times during the game and the holding shot moving between the competitors.
The game was all square after the 9th and 15th ends before Ian played a brilliant conversion shot to take 3 in the 16th end which proved decisive. The Robertsons picked up a single in the 17th end to close the gap to 2 and then Alan just missed a conversion shot of his own in the final end which could have won the game.

2024 Champions

Congratulations to 2024 Champions John Wilson, Bill Neal and Juan Abeal
Mijas Bowls Club

We all expected a high quality Final and the players gave us just that.
All 6 players were on the top of their game and the Skips in particular played some incredible end-winning shots to keep the result in doubt until the last bowl of the last end.

9th April 2024 - Malaga Provincial Triples Semi-Finals
Both Semi-Finals provided edge of the seat excitement for the spectators.
IN the first Miraflores Triple of Shone and Brian Robinson faced the Mijas Triple of Juan Abeal, Bill Neal and John Wilson in a game that had a high level os skill from everyone and lived up to the expectations raised by both teams in the previous rounds.
In the end it was the Mijas team who held on to win 16-15 in a game where the lead changed almost end by end.

The second Semi-Final saw Ray Fenwick,Martin Sheehy and Andy Woodings from La Posada take an early lead against Lauro's Linda and Graham Jarret and Ken Pritchard.
A 6 end winning streak gave them an apparently unassailable 20-5 lead after 12 ends where the lauro team only won 2 ends in those 12.
However Lauro scored 10 shots in the next 5 ends with momentum on their side at 20-15 going into the 17th end and La Posada looking shell shocked.
Lauro were holding another 3 when an excellent final bowl from Andy trailed the jack to give La Posada shot and a 6 shot cushion going intot he final end. Once again Lauro took advantage of some unusually wayward bowling to be hldin 5 or 6 with each Skip having 2 bowls to play. Andy bowled and took shot, about a foot from the jack. Graham just needed to trickle the jack to be holding a possible 6 and was desprately unluck to just slice it a few inches rather than take it cleanly and the jack nestled safely behind Andy's bowl where it remained to take the final end and the match.
The Final will take place tomorrow at 10.30. It seems certain to be another high quality match and as always spectatirs will be welcome.

5th March 2024 - Malaga Open Singles Start Sunday
The Malaga Open Singles are scheduled to be held at Saydo Bowls Club from 10th - 13th March. However, the larger than expected entry has seen the dates extended to include games on Friday 8th and the Final now on Thursday 14th.
46 entries on the 4 rink Saydo green have created a logistical puzzle for Saydo's Tom McLean who made the sensible decision to extend the palying dates.
While the draw will not be compromised, the playing schedule has been altered to allow local players drawn against each other to play their matches early, freeing up rink space on the actual competition dates.
Good luck to everyone taking part.

2nd March 2024 - Exciting Triples League Week as 2nd Place Fight Heats Up
La Posada took a 6-4 home win in their re-arranged match against Lauro - aided by a 2 points and 18 shot penalty against Lauro when one of their players got "lost" on the way to Posada forcing them to forfeit a rink.
That set up a thrilliing encounter between Miraflores and La Posada with both teams on 44 points going into their final match
Unbelieveably they each won 2 Rinks and the score was level at 68-68 meaning both Clubs finished on 49 points. La Posada moved into 2nd place by virtue of having a better shot difference!
If that was not exciting enough for you, Saydo took a 10-0 home victory against Benavista hauling themselves right into the conversation for 2nd place.
While currently on 44 points and in 5th place, 6 points in their final - re-arranged - Match at home against Lauro could see them leapfrog into 2nd place. This match will take place on Monday 4th March.

26th February 2024 - Almeria Retain Inter-Provincial Trophy
Malaga's poor start to the Tournament left them with a mountain to climb to try to overcome a 10 point deficit.
The Ladies did their best winning 5 of their 8 games - a special mention to Barbara Land, Mary Dethridge and Bente Dahlgren who won all 4 of their games.
The Men continued to struggle and once again only won 1 game in each session.
The overall result then was Almeria won 39-25.
The Malaga squad will be hoping that home advantage in October will bring the Trophy back to Malaga.

You can see all of the game results on Results Page

24th February 2024 - Almeria vs Malaga Gets Off To A Difficult Start
Gale force winds made the conditions almost unplayable on the first day of the VII Inter-Provincial Trophy.
With games reduced to 16 ends, home advantage added to the inevitable elemental luck to see Malaga fall to a heavy defeat in the first session, although 2 of the defeats in the Men's games were only by 1 shot.
2 Ladies wins at least gave some consolation.
The afternoon session saw more of the same. A win and a draw from the Men but only 1 win from the Ladies saw the Team, end the day in a precarious 11-21 position.
With 33 needed to ensure victory we have to hope for better performances on Sunday's final two sessions.

Check out each game in Latest Results page.

12th December - Malaga League Results

There were 2 postponed matches to get completed before Christmas and both involved Saydo.
The first involved a trip away to League leaders Mijas and the daunting fixture resulted in a 10-0 defeat for Saydo leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table with Mijas extending their lead over La Posada at the top
In the final fixture of the year Saydo welcomed Lauro with a much strengthed side containing a lot of their 1st team players
Unsurprisingly this resulted in a 10-0 win for the Saydo team - their first win of the season

The Triples League resumes on the 19th January and the Pairs League a few days later on the 24th January.

9th December - Resignations From The Malaga FAB Committee
Today saw the resignations of two of the stalwarts of the FAB in the Malaga Province.

Julian Thomas has filled the role of Treasurer with distinction since the FAB took over the running of Lawn Bowls in the Province in October 2016.
Not only has he been instrumental in keeping the finances of the Province in a healthy condition he has also dealt firmly with the many changes wrought upon us by the various changes in policy from the FAB and the Junta de Andalucia.
With the role of Treasurer much diminished now that the Clubs are dealing more directly with the FAB in Jaen, Julian feels the time is right for him to pass the baton on to someone else.
Julian has not only been a financial rock for the FAB in Malaga but he has also provided much needed advice to many of the Clubs over those years and I am sure everyone will join me in offering our gtratitude and wishing him health and happiness in the future.

Ron Jones stepped into the combined role of Delegado/ Chairman in Janury 2017, following the unexpected resignation of the previous appointee.
In the early days he faced a barrage of hostiltity toward the FAB takeover and the implementation of the many rules and regtulations required to bring Lawn Bowls into line with the Laws governing Sports in Spain, as laid out by the FAB and the Junta de Andalusia.
There was concerted oppostion toward the changes, as "this is not the way we have done it so why should we change?" was a frequent charge in those early days.
In his first address to the Committe he said he would spend his tenure working towards the day when everyone accepted the FAB and it was no longer seen as an "outside" body.
By making the Committee more inclusive and putting the onus on decision making with the Clubs themselves and persuading people that they were ALL the FAB now, he gradually brought this about.
With the onset of COVID bringing much more stringent rules into action he played a crucial role in informing the Clubs of the ever changing regulations they were expected to follow.
Post COVID the existence of the Sport became gained a higher profile than before and the Clubs had to adjust to greater scrutiny from the FAB and the Junta de Andalucia, bringing them into line with Spanish statutes and rules of Governance. He also found himself stepping into roles he would have preferred not to take on as fewer people seemed prepared to become involved in running the sport - Competition Secretary and Team Malaga Manager in particular.
Ill health has caught up wth him and the expectation / uncertainty of a prolonged series of (non-life threatening) medical procedures throughout 2024 will see his involvement in Lawn Bowls greatly reduced.

I am sure everyone will wish him good health and happiness in the coming year.
1st December - Malaga League Results

The Tigers Triples League has alreeady begun the Christmas Break so the only Matches scheduled were in the Lions Pairs League.

Bad weather on Match day caused the cancellation of the Saydo v Lauro match leaving only one fixture played.
Mijas managed a 6-4 home win against La Posada, a result which saw them go back to the top of the league - on Shot Difference!

Of course La Posada have also played one more fixture than Mijias following last week's COVID outbreak.

24th November - Malaga League Results
Week 7 of the Tigers Triples League saw all of the Clubs complete their first 5 matches, with the postponed Benavista v Miraflores fixture being completed.
Lauro and Mijas both had their BYE to round of the fixtures. La Posada overtook Mijas despite a 4-6 home defeat to Miraflores to go into the Christmas break in 2nd place behind Lauro.
Benavista won their re-arranged match against Miraflores but suffered a 2-8 home defeat to Saydo, a result that saw Saydo move level on Points with Mijas.

See the table and all results on the Triples League Results

The Lions Pairs League saw an unexpected postponement of the match between Mijas and Saydo after several of the Mijas team came down with confirmed cases of COVID. Some of them had taken part in the Saydo Open earlier inthe week and the two Clubs thought it expedient to postpone the match until the isolation period had passed.
In the remaining League fixture La Posada had an exciting last end win against Lauro.
With all other games finished the over-all scores were level, Lauro had won 2 games to Saydo's 1 and the remaining game was 16-16 going into the last end. With the first jack delivered wide of the rink, the second jack was delivered agonisingly a few centimeters short of a length and the Jack placed on the T.
With Lauro holding a game and match winning shot, the unfortunate Lauro Skip bowled a little too tight and knocked a 2 meter short bowl in for the winning shot to Saydo. Saydo won 2 games and 65-66 on shots to take the 4-6 win.

17th November - Malaga League Results
Week 6 of the Tigers Triples League saw a an apparantley one-sided win for Lauro against Benavista, when the reality had 3 of the games very close until around the 13th end when Lauro forged ahead. The 10-0 result didn't reflect the quality of Benavista's play but it could be equally said that there was no luck in the win for Lauro.
Saydo Wasps, meanwhile, recorded an epic 10-0 home win against 2nd placed Mijas Eagles in a result few would have predicted.
La Posada and Miraflores both had BYES.

In the Lions Pairs League the two top teams both recorded 8-2 victories to keep Mijas Swifts 4 points clear of La Posada Braves with 4 matches played.

16th November - Malaga Challenge Cup Semi-Final Results
The Semi-Final between Benavista and Lauro proved a close and tense affair. With Lauro only winning 2 of the 6 games the match. The "winner takes all" format of the Competition means that the individual team victories were not as important by how many you won by - or just as importantly how few you lost by.
As a consequence the relatively narrow wins on 3 of the matches for Benavista were overturned by the 2 excellent wins to give Lauro a 94-90 victory.

In the other Semi-Final, La Posada, fresh from their own very tense 1 shot win in the previous round, won 5 of their 6 games against Mijas - and the one they lost was by a meagre 2 shots - giving them an impressive 109-89 victory.

The Final will be at the neutral venue of Mjas Bowls Club, on Saturday 25th November starting at the usual time of 11.00 AM.

More details can be found on the Challenge Cup web page.

10th November - Malaga League Results

8th November - Santa Maria Bowls Club Announce Their Forthcoming Disbandonment
In an email to the FAB Delegate, the President of Santa Maria offically announced the intention to close the Club from January 1st 2024.
This was partially due to lack of members and partially due to not being able to correctly update the Club's status with the Junta de Andalucia.
The loss of such a respected Club with a long history that stretches back more than 30 years, is to be lamented. It has been in the pipeline for sometime, however, following the sale of their home ground some 18 months ago.
While a iot of effort was spent trying to keep the Club active, with the generous assistance of Mijas Bowls Club who offered green sharing facilities to Santa Maria, it ultimately proved too difficult to keep the Club viable as a separate entity.

3rd November - Malaga League Results
Week 4 of the Tigers Triples League saw all 6 teams in action for the first time. The top of the table remains close with Lauro. Mijas and La Posada all winning.

1st November - Malaga 2 Bowl Pairs Champions
Winners
Kevin Westwell and Paul Hughes (Lauro Golf Bowls Club)

In an exciting display of superb bowling the teams of Kevin Westwell and Paul Hughes (Lauro Golf Bowls Club) and Allen Gateshill and Nina McKenzie (Saydo Bowls Club) kept the spectators on the edge of their seats.

Kevin and Paul just edged out Allen and Nina after a tense and exciting dispaly of bowling saw the Lauro pair take a commanding lead only for Allen and Nina to stage one of their amazing fightbacks.

31st October - Malaga 2 Bowl Pairs Semi-Finals
Paul Hughes and Kevin Westwell continued their procession towards the title with an comfortable win over fellow Lauro members Terry Higgins and Rob Wright. Paul led superbly putting pressure on the opposition from the start and when called on Kevin "mopped up" with his usual style, resulting in a 23-8 victory.
In the other Semi-Final Graham Jarret and Jeff Turner looked certain to make it an all Lauro final with an impressive 12-3 lead after 10 ends. However Allen Gateshill and Nina McKenzie have a deserved reputation for staging late comebacks and did so again to draw level for the first time in the game on the 17th end. The Saydo pair snatched victory on the final end thanks to 2 perfectly drawn bowls from Allen.
The Final will be tomorrow at 11.00am
The results and tomorrow's draw can be seen at 2 Bowls Pairs

30th October - Malaga 2 Bowl Pairs Continues
A couple of all Lauro matches produced some exciting bowling. The match between yesterday's surprise package Ken Pritchard and Peter Meyerhoff against Rob Wright and Terry Higgins went back and forth throughout with the scores level 11-11 after 15 ends but the more experienced pair picked up a crucial 3 shots on the 17th end.

The other all Lauro match saw couple Jane Richardson (partnered by Ann Anderson) and Paul Hughs (with Kevin Westwell) face off for the family bragging rights and of course a place in the Semi-Final.
Really good bowling from both teams saw the teams level at 15 ends, Jane and Ann take a 1 shot lead on the 16th end, Paul and Kevin take a one shot lead on the 17th end and Kevin rescue a potential extra end with a beautifully drawn last bowl to win 17-15.

In the other matches, Alan Gateshill and Nina McKenzie held off a spirited fightback from Simone Morgan and pat Fisher to finish comfortable winners - having both bowled superbly all the way through.
Meanwhile Lauro's Jeff Turner and Graham Jarret had a fairly comfortable win against an out of sorts Tom McLean and Isabel McCarlie to complete the Semi-Final line up. The results and tomorrow's draw can be seen at 2 Bowls Pairs

29th October - Malaga 2 Bowl Pairs Start at Lauro
The first round of the 2 Bowl Pairs began today.
Pre-tournament favourites, Lauro's Paul Hughes and Kevin Westwell - who rarely lose on their home ground - got off to a strong start against Club mates Dine and John Warn.
The suprise result was probably Ken Pritchard and Peter Meyerhoff - relative novices in FAB Competitions - take a good win against veterans Barbara land and Mary Detheridge, having led from the first end to the last.
The results can be seen at 2 Bowls Pairs

27th October - Malaga League Results

26th September - Summer Championships Open Pairs Day 4

Congratulations to 2023 Champions Allen Gateshill and Nina McKenzie (Saydo)
In the morning Semi-Finals another excellent game between Allen Gateshill and Nina Mckenzie against Jeff Rowe and Carolyn Hogarth which was nip and tuck for most of the ends before Allenand Nina eventually took the win in the final few ends.
The other Semi-Final saw Ron and Sue Jones (Lauro) defeat Tom McLean and Isabel McCarlie in a game where Sue was at her very best and settng up the game for a comforatable win.
In the afternoon Ron and Sue got off to a flying start, bowling well and forcing Allen to play a lot of "saving" bowls to stay in the game. He kept on doing that throughout the game, eventually bringing it to a 15-15 going into the last end. Once again 2 or 3 down he managed to play an excellent 4th bowl to take the end and the game on the tightest of measures. As often in the case, the only time Allen and Nina led was on that victorious last end.

25th September - Summer Championships Open Pairs Day 3

Jeff and Carolyn held their nerve and won the tie breaking 19th end with 2 shots.
An honourable mention too, goes to Peter Tongeri and new bowler John Fyfe in his first tournament who played very well to reach the quarrter finals.
Full details of the round can be found on the webpage: OPEN PAIRS

25th September - Summer Championships Open Pairs Day 2
A full day of bowling as 16 Pairs battled for a place in the next round. Once again some superb bowling produced some classic games and the pick was probably the all Saydo affair which saw husband and wife JIM and Isabel McCarlie on opposite sides in a battle for bragging rights.
As you would expect it was a tough encounter but Isabel and partner Tom Mclean emerged the victors over Jim and his partner Andy Wake

25th April - Contreversial Law rescinded By World Bowls
This from World Bowls:

"Concern has been around the severe penalty of forfeiting the game and clarity in the wording of the law itself.br> Recommendations have been received to reduce the severity of the forfeit to penalising with shot deductions.
This approach would be inconsistent with any other law and was not felt to be a suitable solution.
Penalties have always existed for the displacement of a bowl by its own team players but at the time of the 2021 Laws review these penalties were not felt to be severe enough for what is considered an act of “cheating”.
Having considered several options to improve the intent of these two laws, the World Bowls Laws Advisory Group have concluded and recommended to the Board of World Bowls to rescind them.
The numbering of Law 37.1.4 will remain untouched until the next review of the Laws.
The changes to the Laws are summarised as follows:
7.1.3 If a bowl in its original course is deliberately displaced or stopped by a member of the team that delivered the bowl, the defaulting team will forfeit the game to their opponent"

Malaga Provincial Fours Winners
Tom McLean, Nina McKenzie
Isabel McCarlie, Allen Gateshill

Congratulations to the Champions: Tom McLean, Nina McKenzie, Isabel McCarlie & Allen Gateshill, Saydo Bowls Club

Sometimes Bowls Finals can be a bit of an anti-climax. Not this one. It was a game that had everything. Two closely matched teams playing very well, constantly changing heads, spectacular shots and - yes - some outrageously good and bad luck.
One team would take the lead and then the other would overtake them.. Entertining, edge of the seat bowling from both teams and a very good win for the Saydo team. Commiserations to Lauro's Ron Jones, Julian Thomas, Margaret Woodin and Terry Higgins.

18th March 2023 - Tigers League Ends As Lauro Snatch 4th Place
The last game of the Tigers league was a rearranged match between Lauro Tigers and Saydo Wasps.
The game was called off in February after 3 ends due to gale force winds and torrential rain making the green unplayable.
Lauro need to win 8-2 to take 4th place from Saydo and went into the match full of confidence after a good 6-4 win at Benavista the previous day. Saydo also had their tails up fresh from celebrating an excellent 10 - 0 win away to Miraflores.
Despite some quality bowling from Saydo - especially from Terry Brooker who had "one of those days" when everything went right for him, Lauro took the Match 8-2 to take 4th place.

17th March 2023 - Tigers League- Congratulations to the Winners - Santa Maria Admirals

After a tough campaign Santa Maria Admirals clinched the title on the ultimate day of the season, finally winning the League by 10 points with a 5-5 draw against Mijas Eagles.
Chased all the way by Benavista Panthers they went into their last game knowing 2 points would be enough to win the title, whatever the result of Benavista's final game.
Benavista hung on to 2nd place despite unexpectedly losing 6-4 to Lauro Tigers, the 4 points being enough to enjoy a single point advantage over 3rd place La Posada Warriors.
Lauro Tigers, meanwhile go into their re-arranged game against currently 4th placed Saydo Wasps needing to win by at least 4 points to overtake them for that 4th place.
That match will be on Saturday 19th and will conclude the Winter League programme.

10th March 2023 - Santa Maria Admirals Close In On Triples League Title
With one round of fixtures left to play the Triples League title looks like it is heading to Santa Maria Admirals.
This week's 13th round of matches saw santa maria take a close match against Lauro 7-3, while fellow contenders Benavista went down 8-2 to La Posada.
This leaves Santa Maria leading La Posada (who have finished all of their matches and have the BYE next week) by 6 points. Only Benavista can mathematically overtake Santa Maria - they are 9 points behind going into the final matches.
To do so they will have to win their final match at home to Lauro 10-0 and at the same time Santa Maria would have to lose 10-0 at home to bottom of the table Mijas Eagles. Neither scenario is likely but watch this space.
For full results and League table check out the web page: Triples League Results

10th March 2023 - Congratulations to Pairs League Winners - Mijas Swifts

David Mainwaring
Dave mainwaring
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of David Mainwaring, following a short battle with cancer.
David was very involved with the bowling world here in Malaga.

The last President of Benalmadena Bowls Club, a position he held for many years before the Club was forced to close, he was an excellent League Co-ordinator, where his organisation skills proved invaluable and of course served the FAB Executive committee as a successful Manager of the Malaga team.

A good friend with a lively sense of humour and strong loyalties he was always ready to give advice and assistance as needed.
Our thoughts and condolences go to Heather and his family and friends.

The draw was made on the 28th August and is now on the web page Open Pairs
A healthy entry of 21 teams has been received, spread fairly evenly from 5 Clubs. Whilst this is almost half the number of entries from the last time this event took place (2019), in the current environment with Brexit restrictions, it represents a good turnout.
Good luck to all the competitors!

Winter League Details Announced
Following a meeting of the FAB Executive Committee, Clubs have agreed the format for the Winter League.
The Tigers League will return in its familiar format of 4 rinks of triples, played home and away between October and December and then repeated after Christmas between January and March 2023.
Due to commence on 16th October, the full programme will be sent out to the Clubs and once confirmed, added to the website.
All Clubs are anticipated to enter a team.
In addition, the Lions League will also return but under a different format.
With some Clubs struggling to commit to fielding another Triples team, the format has been agreed as 3 rinks of Pairs.
How many Clubs will field a team in this league is not yet confirmed and we will update once details are available.

3rd August - Summer Championships Begin in September
The 2022 Summer Championships will begin on September 4th. The Championships have not been played since 2019 due to the COVID restrictions of 2020 and 2021. Let's hope it has a successful return!

The first discipline will be the Open Pairs. This is a competition where teams can be any combination of the sexes. All Male, All Female or Mixed.
It will be held at Lauro Golf Bowls Club and entry forms have been sent to your Clubs today.

1st July - Leagues Finally Finish
Both Spring leagues have now come to a conclusion.
League Champions are:
Pairs League: Mijas Bowls Club
Australian Pairs League: Lauro Golf Bowls Club
Congratulations to both Clubs

This was a new concept for the Malaga Province and 2 new Leagues. At the outset we said it would be a new experience and we would take stock at the end to see what worked and what didn't.
We certainly weren't expecting the ferocious heat of mid-June and the subsequent decisions of quite a few bowlers to pull out of the league in its latter stages because of it.
Part of the discussions between the Clubs will be to decide whether those temperatures are a one-off or should be expected for next year.
15th June - Malaga Australian Pairs
Congratulations to the Winners John and Sheila Wilson from Mijas Bowls Club.
The pair were deserved winners following really good performances in every round and they just proved too strong for their fellow Club Members Juan Abeal and Geoff Edgington

11th March - Lauro Win Pairs League
In a day of high drama, the Pairs League was settled in an unusual fashion.
The day started with high hopes for the Lauro Mustangs, going into their final Pairs League match.
They were 9 points clear of the closest rival in the shape of Mijas Apaches but were well aware that Mijas still had 2 games to play and a possible 20 points up for grabs.
It was vital therefore that they got a good result away to Saydo – who had only recorded 2 victories all season – to put pressure on their rivals.
There was bitter disappointment, though when Saydo turned in a terrific performance to take a 7-3 home victory.
Although those 3 points gave a 12 point lead at the top there was little optimism amongst the Lauro team that Mijas couldn’t make that up over their 2 games.
All that changed in less than an hour after the news came in of a shock 10-0 defeat for Mijas AT HOME to Benavista! It was a shock because Benavista had only won ONCE all season.
Figures were checked and double checked the news of the result verified and realisation sunk in - the Mustangs were PAIRS LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!

Congratulations to Lauro Mustangs, on a well deserved victory.

You can see all of the results and the League table HERE
More COVID Changes To Schedule

Malaga Provincial 2 Bowl Pairs Winners - 24th November 2021
This competition saw an historic FIRST for Lawn Bowls in Malaga as Mijas Bowls Club's all Spanish duo of Juan Abeal and Manolo Suarez lifted the Men's 2 Bowls Pairs title at La Posada. Their win saw the first ALL SPANISH TEAM win a major Competition in the Province. They beat Lauro's Trevor Burgin and Robert Wright in a highly competitive game.

In the Ladies Final the Santa Maria pair of Barbara Land and Mary Detheridge beat Saydo pairing of Lesley Bell and Pat Baker. The encounter was very much a "game of two halves" with the early stages seeing Lesley and Pat holding a lead right up to the 9th end, before the Santa Maria ladies found their length to pull away in the second half of the game. Once again the game proved a real tussle between two leads on top form, with Mary just edging it.

2 Bowl Pairs

Malaga Provincial Men's Singles Winner - 27th October

Pauline held her nerve and picked up a match winning 2 in the final end. Pauline adds the Singles title to her recent Triples win
Ladies Triples Malaga Provincial Ladies Triples Winners - 13th October
Congratulations to our 2021 Winners, Joan Corbett, Pauline Ward and Pauline Ball from Mijas Lawn Bowls Club. In one of the best Finals of recent years the game was all level after 17 ends. The 18th end was replayed after some excellent bowling from both sides resulted in the end being "killed" by Joan Corbett. The replayed end was another example of superb bowling from both teams but the Mijas team came away with a well-earned victory. Commiserations to the losing finalists Janice Rowe, Shelley Greenwodd and Julie Banfield from La Posada Bowls Club

Ladies Triples
Malaga Provincial Men's Triples Winners - 13th October

Corona Virus Restrictions
A separate page for Corona virus updates has now been introduced. Please use that for all your latest news on how it is affecting our Sport.

7th June - Phase 3 is Introduced
The government has announced that we will enter Phase 3 as of Monday 8th June.
This will be the final Phase before the return to what is being called “the new normal”.
Whilst the National government has set the protocols for Phase 3, they have also devolved power to the Regional governments to decide when and how Phase 3 develops and ends.
Once again there seems to be a difference between sports facilities and other facilities and there is little change to the protocols that affect us in Phase 3.
Here is what we have received so far as explicit instructions:
• Booking no longer necessary – however records of attendance must continue to be maintained.
• 50% use of the green surface up to a maximum of 20 players
(effectively we can use a maximum of 4 rinks)
• face mask not mandatory if the distance of 2 meters is maintained – for those over 70 their use is recommended at all times.
• spectators 1 every 20 meters
• Club bar remains closed, drinks must be brought from home
Effectively the rest of the protocols remain in force from Phase 2.
However, we are in a very fluid situation. The Junta de Andalucia has requested permission to allow travel between provinces.
The FAB has submitted a draft proposal to the FEB to present to the CSD. Hopefully this will allow decisions to be made at a regional level very soon.

The primary concern is that in Lawn Bowls the majority of our members are in the High Risk age bracket which the government continues to try to protect more vigorously than the general population. This may mean that restrictions for our Sport remain tighter for longer.

Update 29th May 2020. Malaga will move in to Phase 2 on Monday 1st June

Go to our Corona Virus page for more information.

Update 12th May 2020 - Note These changes refer to Phase 1.
Today we received more information from Consejo Superior Deportivo (CSD) and the F.E.B.
Notification of Return to Training For The Sport Of Bowls
For those Provinces that have been allowed to transition to Phase 1, the conditions are established in which professional, High Level, High Performance, national interest and federated athletes can carry out their sports activity during this phase. Both the CSD and the FEB aim to promote the reactivation of Bowling while maintaining health security, activating the measures that guarantee the lowest risk in the development of our federated sport, mitigating the appearance of new cases and their spread. (FAB Website can be viewed here)

OUR PRIORITY GOAL IS THE PROTECTION AND SAFETY OF OUR ATHLETES.

On the 14th March the Spanish Government passed a decree putting the country in "lockdown". These strict restrictions mean that all Sports facilities will be closed until further notice.
All bowls activity will be suspended until these restrictions are lifted.
Please stay safe, stay at home and stay well.
