Malaga Province Representative Team.
VI Andalusian Inter-Provincial Championships - October 2023
With Almeria hosting the competition this time the squad travelled up on Friday and spent the afternoon at Indalo Bowls Club trying out the green.
Late withdrawals because of illness and injury left us under-strength but confident with squads of only 14 men and 14 women instead of 16. It could have been worse and our thanks go to Ewan Fraser and John Warn for stepping in at the last minute, a decision helped by them already travelling to the hotel to support the distaff side of their family.
The Match got off to a difficult start on Saturday morning, as only 1 men’s and 2 ladies teams recorded wins, with everyone struggling with the very fast green and subsequent problems adapting to or finding the weight.
Most of the lost games were, however, very close and we weren’t too despondent.
End of Session 1: Almeria 10 - 6 Malaga
The afternoon session proved no better with the men winning 2 games and the ladies winning only 1.
To add to the misery Mary Dethridge had to withdraw part way through her 2nd game of the day and would take no further part in the competition, weakening an already depleted ladies squad.
End of Session 2: Almeria 20 – 12 Malaga
The poor results kept on coming on Sunday morning. The men again only managed 1 win and this time the ladies joined them again only winning 1 game.
End of session 3: Almeria 32 - 16 Malaga
Needing a very unlikely 16-0 victory in the final session some pride was restored as the men won 3 games and the ladies won 2 for our only winning session, 10 - 6.
Overall Result: Almeria 38 – 26 Malaga
While the results didn’t go our way, there were stand out performances by Nina McKenzie, Jenny Parkin and Isabel McCarlie who won all 4 of their games and Bill Neal, John Wilson and Jeff Rowe who won 3 and only lost the 4th by 1 shot. Excellent work!
Despite the result the match was played in the usual friendly, though always competitive, atmosphere and friendships were renewed and improved. It was good that Almeria FINALLY won a Match and I am sure defeat will spur Malaga on to regain the Cup when we once again visit Almeria in February 2024.Malaga Delegado, Ron Jones, presenting the trophy to Almeria Delegada Ruth Compton thanked Indalo Bowls Club for their hospitality and friendliness of all their members who had worked so hard to make the event a success, the Umpires and Markers for their dedication and especially the bowlers from Almeria.
The friendly spirit of the matches ensured that this competition will continue for many years to come as we all look forward to renewing the rivalry in the next Championship, to be held in Almeria in February 2024, with the message the trophy was only on loan and Malaga expect to retrieve it then
Ruth Compton re-iterated her thanks to Indalo and congratulated the Almeria team on its success. She, too, looked forward to the next match and looked forward to retaining the trophy in Almeria.
